Karaoke Follow-Up
Wow, I woke up at 7:55 a.m., thought "I've only slept for four-plus hours; will lay back down for a minute" and woke at 11:20. Christ on toast. $1.50 Blue Moon drafts are most excellent.

Lil' Peeps Raxaroke was fun, although the K.J. was totes lazy. Preferred to play the "dance" hits of Hinder and Arctic Monkeys for 45 minutes or so, at three different times, so he could play darts and drink and what not. Poor form. "Electric Slide" twice. God. Had he been normal and dedicated, I probably could have sung 7-8 times. As it was, I got four selections out. All new for me. Thanks to [info]tcrawfor and [info]girl_about_town for the suggestions.

1. "Stuck in the Middle With You," First song of the entire night. Good for my range, upbeat and fun, Sheryl Crow totally stole the music of this one, by the way. I give it a solid A- and will add it to the list of standbys.

2. "Surrender," Cheap Trick. For those of you who give a damn, the intro is in the key of "B" and then the vocals change higher into "C." I pulled it off. Not as high-energy as I'd hoped, because it was early in the evening and followed back-to-back from Stealer's Wheel, and I felt odd about being up there for 9 straight minutes. Give it a B-.

3. "867-5309 (Jenny)," Tommy Tutone. Sorry, [info]blathering. Please do not disown me. This was fun but just okay. The lyrics read"Damnit Jenny, who can I turn to," which I don't think is correct. It's "Jenny, Jenny," right? Why would he be cursing this girl he's never met but enjoys masturbating to? C+.

4. "Take it Easy," The Eagles. The performance was fine, but it was not an Eagles crowd. Eagle moustache, eagle sky. B-.

E'beth from my book club came out and kicked fecking ass at "Killing Me Softly" and "Criminal." I never knew the gal had such a voice in her. Nic rocked out "Me and Bobby McGee," as she does, shortly after quietly tolerating some ignorant wife-beater-wearing cretin at the next table -- definitely drunk, hopefully mentally slow, possibly straight out of the federal lock-up, who thought it awesome to boast about being a white man not afraid to shout the "N" word. I'm so pleased that Michael Richards has paved the way for the ignorant.

[info]rhodesy and [info]leona_roja ventured East in support of our mad vocal skillz but couldn't stay too long due to the cloud of smoke hovering over the place and making non-smokers fairly miserable. I'm often a social smoker, but damn am I hoping for St. Louis metro to go the way of NYC, Cali, and all of Ohio. Girls, did you hit the club on your way home?

[info]sheeeva7 wins the prize of the night for driving 45 minutes to get to this dive, singing Counting Crows, Joss Stone, Xtina, and No Doubt awesomely, and staying as late as Mr. Whirled and I DESPITE having to work at 6:00 a.m. today and deal with her two young children. Yay for rock-star friends.

Also? A little person was there, drunk, with a dyed black mohawk and an orange "County Jail" tee shirt. And large hoop earnings.

And that is all. Gorgeous day here today. Think we'll ride bikes, do some cleaning, grill out. I wish I hadn't slept away three hours of the morning, but I guess I needed it.

No, we haven't been to the club in ages. It's just not the same now that our two favorite DJ's are gone. Instead of getting anywhere from four to seven Duran songs a night, we're lucky if we get two and the remaining DJ can not blend songs very well. It's just differnt. I think we'll be going when [info]syldath comes to visit though.

Sorry we couldn't stay longer!

God, that sucks!! Bad DJs are the worst, and I'm so sorry to hear that.

We should go to Atomic Cowboy sometime - it is in the "grove," on Manchester east of Kingshighway. Very fun place ... DJ plays a lot of 80s alternative tunes. And I still need to go to London Calling, to which I've never been ...

When is G. visiting?

That might be worth checking out. I do love my 80s alternative tunes. ;)

London Calling is interesting. I like it more than [info]rhodesy does. Of course, I say that but I haven't been to London Calling since our DJ's left, so I have no idea what it's like now. We'll have to go and check it out sometime though.

[info]syldath is visiting the first two weeks in April.

As importantly, what did you wear?
I need the details of how good and/or bad you looked while singing. Did you bring the usual Tom Boy to the level of Tom Cat? Or better still, Tom Fox?

Tom Curious.

PS - Girl on girl karaoke-action is hot. So, don't give up on it just 'cause 8675309 didn't work. What about Angie by the Stones? (a personal favorite). "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)"? Bowie's "China Girl"? VU's "Sweet Jane"? Dolly Parton's "Jolene"? "Maggie May"? "Rosalita" from the E-street Bands' best album. "Roxanne"? "Mustang Sally"? "Susie Q"? And for ultra-confused sexuality references, "Lola" by the underrated Kinks.

Re: As importantly, what did you wear?
1. Cars tee shirt, which is dark brown with slight accents of black, blue, green. Stylish jeans. Green flip flops. Hair, which vacillated between down (straight) and ponytail. And I do have bangs now.

2. Looking Glass is verrry intriguing. As is Rod.
2b. One of the dudes we were with (Mr. Whirled's friend's fiance's best friend's husband ... phew) sang "Lola." KJ said he thought it was the first request for that in history.

Re: As importantly, what did you wear?
Also - thoughts on "Damnit Jenny" v. "Jenny, Jenny" The 'roke lyrics indicated "Damnit Jenny" thrice ... at the beginning of all three verses. What?

Re: As importantly, what did you wear?
I'm pretty sure that you are correct about the words. Not that I'm an expert since I tune it out 9 times out of 10.

Re: As importantly, what did you wear?
It is without a doubt, "Jenny. Jenny" He never damns Jenny. But, let's remember that Karaoke is Japanese and often these lyrics are transposed by second languagers. Go with your gut. Sing it the way you always have in your car/shower. Because, usually the screwy words you've come up with sound close enough to the real lyrics that it will go unnoticed and you'll sound more passionate for it. Good karaoke takes conviction. Sing it your way.

Is there karaoke in Chattanooga? Because I would go for serious.
Bethers: Cartoon Me[info]ordinarywhirled on March 24th, 2007 11:29 pm (UTC)
Oh. My. God. That would be the absolute best. We must investigate for Friday night.

I was totally resigned to NOT go to work today when I stumbled in at 330AM **gasp** But at 615ish, the boy woke up yelling. I fell back asleep and woke an hour later and made it into work at 830. I decided to only work 3 hours and then I stopped by [info]rhodesy's, picked up the first 2 dresden files books and we went to IHOP for pancakes. yum. Made it home again at 3, but pm this time. lol I am exhausted. We definitely have to do that again...
